Alan Britton Cup Final

By Maurice Galley

Penalty decider

Willington WMC collected their second cup of the season in winning an Alan Britton Memorial Trophy penalty decider against Middlestone Moor.
The WMC shaded the first half but it was 0-0 at half time after Ellis Wymer had a goal turned down for hand ball in the 43rd minute.
Wymer broke the deadlock on 75 minutes when he reacted first to turn the ball home inside the six yard box.
Increasingly Willington were forced on the back foot and Middlestone Moor's pressure was rewarded on 88 munutes when Aaron Jackson slammed a penalty into the top corner. The drama continued in injury time when Willington had a man sent off.
And so to spotkicks with Willington running out winners 9-8. At Willington games in the past Alan Britton and his pal Colin Genner were always together on the touchline. It was therefore appropriate that Colin should present the trophy today.
The man of the match, chosen by Ian Britton, went to Willington keeper Andrew Stocks.
Afterwards I caught up with Darren Britton - what would Alan have thought "He would have enjoyed that" he said.
