Auckland Charity Cup Final

By Maurice Galley

Stanhope take the trophy

Stanhope Town SSC defeated holders Willington WMC 2-1 to win the Auckland Charity Cup at Bishop Auckland tonight.
The dales side were the better team early on and were rewarded with a goal from Sam Green after 25 minutes.
Willington were much improved after the break but they conceded a second goal through Lewis Martin mid way through the half. After hitting the bar the WMC reduced the deficit from a Michael Hull twenty yarder in the 88th minute. Willington pressed hard late on but a resolute Stanhope defence held out.
The final whistle of a close hard fought game signalled celebrations from Stanhope and further disappointment for Willington after a second final defeat of the season. They will be hoping to rectify matters when they return to the same venue next Tuesday night to face Evenwood Town in the final of the South Durham Charity Bowl.
