The Final Whistle - 26 March 2022

Willington stage fine fightback

Willington WMC had won all previous games with Stanhope SSC this season but a WMC win looked unlikely today when they trailed 2-0 at half time in the Weardale Cup semi final. Sam Green bagged both Stanhope goals during a first half when both sides hit the woodwork. Green then missed a good chance for Stanhope early in the second half and that triggered a fine comeback from the visitors. Goals from Ryan Ward, Johnny Bains and Steven Mason earned a 3-2 win that set up a final against Middlestone Moor or Ferryhill Town. "Absolutely gutted to throw that away" commented Stanhope Manager Dean Tinkler.
Unbeaten Heighington moved a step closer to the second division title with a 4-0 victory over Crook Wanderers. Scorers were Ryan Mercer, Martin Butterworth, Patrick Howe and Sean Carr.
Newton Aycliffe Royal Telegraph kept their hopes alive with a 4-1 win at Wynyard The Stables. Harry Laverty. Peter Harbron scored for Stables while Ryan Peart, Jack Mitchell and Josh Bayne were on target for Telegraph who must win their last four games and hope that Heighington slip up in their remaining game at home to Ferryhill.
