The Final Whistle - 12 September 2020

By Maurice Galley

Good to be back...

A warm welcome from the column to the three new sides, Catchgate Community FC, Langley Moor The Station and Newton Aycliffe Royal Telegraph.
We must start though in division one where champions Middlestone Moor Masons Arms were held 2-2 at home by Evenwood Town. Ethan Grayson and Ross Morrow scored for Masons with Chris Howe and Jamie Lamb responding for Evenwood.
Shildon Railway are the early pacesetters after twice coming from behind to win 3-2 at Stanhope. Sam Green and Jake Henderson (pen) were the Stanhope marksmen and the Shildon winner came from an own goal.
Darlington Deacon lead the way in division two following a 5-0 victory over newcomers Newton Aycliffe Royal Telegraph. Danny Longstaff (2), John Shields, Jordan Colley and Josh Ward were on target for the victors.
Crook Wanderers kicked off with a 1-0 victory over Langley Moor The Station. Adam Blair bagged the Wanderers matchwinner and there was a "Well played" to the new boys from Wanderers Steven
Fairgrieve. "Aye it was a good game" replied Station's Benji Harle.
Ferryhill Town gained a narrow 1-0 victory over Heighington with Brad Wilkinson bagging the only goal of the game.
There was a high scoring encounter at St Helens where visitors Wolsingham beat Bishop Pavilion 5-4. "Good game to watch. Well done on the win lads" said Pavillion's John Fazackerley.
And so to the Durham Minor Cup where Willington WMC came through 8-7 on penalties at Wheatley Hill. The sides had been level 1-1 after ninety minutes with the Wheatley Hill equaliser coming two minutes from time. Keeper Will Coulson was the Willington hero saving two penalties and scoring one himself.
The all Crook league clash at Catchgate saw first division Barnard Castle Glaxo Rangers overcome the Community Centre 6-0.
And so the new website is up and running. Please let me know your views - particularly if you think it could be improved. Back next week .......
